TODAY'S TOP STORIES: Bern Co discovers potentially fraudulent voter registration cards

ACORN tied to questionable voter registration forms

By Gwyneth Doland 09/17/2008

The Bernalillo County Clerk's Office reported yesterday that it has found more than 1,000 voter registration cards that may be fraudulent. The Albuquerque Journal reports that the bulk of new registrations has been submitted by ACORN, a non-profit that has collected more than 70,000 new voter registrations in New Mexico this year. (It was an ACORN worker who registered two teens in 2005, leading state Republican leaders to pressure former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias to pursue voter registration fraud.) The majority of third-party registrations have been submitted by ACORN, and some of the suspect forms had already been flagged by the group, although Clerk Maggie Toulouse-Oliver could not say how many of the suspect registrations were from ACORN or how many of those had been identified as suspect by them. The Clerk's Office has been tracking suspect cards since late last month; it still has 6,000 registration cards to process, so that total may grow further.

The Farmington City Council is considering a ban on high-alcohol beer and fortified wine. The City Attorney has been asked to draft an ordinance banning the inexpensive drinks as part of an effort to combat public drunkenness. According to the Daily Times, councilors named beers such as Steel Reserve and Olde English, but the City Attorney couldn't come up with any examples of fortified wine when asked. (Could they be thinking of Port and sherry? Or Night Train and Thunderbird?) Next week the Council will also consider a ban on Sunday liquor sales.

In Roswell, a Catholic priest told KOBTV that he's heard from parishoners that local police are terrorizing illegal immigrants and that they're afraid even to go to Mass. Police Chief Robert H. Smith said the charges stem from "ignorance...uninformed people talking and causing panic."

If you've been watching local TV this week then you might have seen Steve Pearce's new ad hitting opponent Tom Udall on late-term abortions. The so-called partian-birth abortion issue is an easy one for conservatives, although the rare procedure accounts for less than 1 percent of all abortions. Also this week, local stations began airing a national ad targeting Obama with a disturbing and confusing ad from an anti-abortion group on a similar subject.
