There's growing concern about a gang of bandits who are invading Albuquerque homes and may be targeting Mexican immigrants too afraid to go to the police, according to KRQE-TV, Channel 13.
The thugs smash their way in. They're heavily armed, and they're posing as police, according to the report. There have been at least three home invasions here in Albuquerque in the past two weeks, but there may be many more that have gone unreported.
Police believe the crooks may be targeting Mexican nationals, including some who are too afraid to come forward because they may be here illegally.
In Las Cruces, a group that monitors the academic performance of student athletes has suggested shortening the college basketball season. At its June 17 meeting, the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics called on the NCAA to shorten the season in an effort to lessen the strain on players who miss classes while on the road, according to the Las Cruces Sun-News.
While he supports the role of the Knight Commission in its efforts to support student athletes, New Mexico State University Athletics Director McKinley Boston said its role is often to take the high ground.
"Their role is to seek ways to hold institutions, primarily the NCAA, accountable," Boston said. "If you are trying to move an agenda, you start with the utopia and hope that at some point, you can find some middle ground."
