TODAY'S TOP STORIES: Pricier school lunches at APS

The price of APS school lunches is going up and the Albuquerque Journal  has the details this morning. According to Andrea Schoellkopf’sstory, APS is expected to announce later this week a 15 to 25 cent increase in the cost of school lunches; they now cost between $1.60 and $2. APS is hoping that more families will apply for the free and reduced-price lunch program, which would direct more federal funds to APS for the breakfast and lunch programs.

 
ABCnews.com has a long story about Tom Udall and his cousins Mark Udall and Gordon Smith, who are all running for US Senate seats. Tom's first cousin Mark Udall, said this, explaining his relationship to Gordon Smith, a Republican from Oregon: "His grandfather and my grandfather were brothers. His grandmother and my grandmother were sisters … So his mom and my dad were double first cousins, which is beyond my genealogical expertise..."

 
Speaking of Udalls, Tom Udall is taking credit today for helping to pass the Sabinoso Wilderness Act. According to the AP, which would designate more than 17,600 acres near Las Vegas, N.M. as wilderness. The Las Cruces Sun-News picked up that story. UPDATE: Udall's office called this afternoon to clarify that he didn't just help to pass the bill, he wrote the bill. Sorry, Tom. We want to give full credit where it's due!

 
The UNM Economics department announced that it will be conducting a study to determine how Albuquerque-area water customers might react to an increase in water rates. The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility has said that it will not raise rates until 2012.

 
In the ongoing tussle between the Church of Scientology and downtown business owners, the church is appealing a ruling that would have prevented them from dramatically renovating and moving into the old Gizmo store downtown at Fourth and Central. According to the New Mexico Business Weekly, some business owners think the church would bring in more customers, while others say that a church doesn’t fit with the area’s arts and entertainment focus. Yesterday it was determined that the land use hearing officer had 10 days to report to the City Council with a recommendation.
