Here's a round up of top stories around New Mexico today.
The Las Cruces Sun-News looks into whether or not Southern New Mexico’s workforce is prepared to reap the benefits of increasing high-tech jobs and notes a shortage of nurses available to fill health care jobs. While a record low-unemployment rate is good news, a bigger question is whether or not workers are prepared to work at “the level” they would like to be at.
The Farmington Daily Times reported over the weekend that a Farmington soldier, Staff Sgt. Kevin Casey Roberts, was killed Wednesday in Afghanistan. Serving his third tour overseas, Roberts was killed when he encountered an “improvised explosive device.” Roberts is the fifth San Juan County resident to be killed in action since 2003.
A dispute between a developer and neighborhood associations near the University of New Mexico pits “green” building against neighborhood resistance to more density, reports the Albuquerque Journal. Developer Sheffield Partners says that if their condo project is denied, the City will have sent a message that developers should not bother trying to meet the City’s “smart growth” goals. But residents say they already have a dense neighborhood, and that the 4-story, 46-unit condo designed for a half acre lot is the “right building” in the “wrong place.”
The Albuquerque Journal also details how much tax-payer money—more than $450,000 over the past three years—Senator Shannon Robinson has been able to funnel to a UNM sports club. Robinson is coach and apparently just about everything else to the UNM Rugby team, one of 15 “club” sports that operate outside of the UNM athletic department.
Work on the state rail runner project caused the La Cienega overpass on I-25 to be knocked down. The Santa Fe New Mexican describes the impact this is having on residents who live across from La Cienega on the east side of I-25.
A visioning process for Las Cruces and Doña Ana County, called Vision 2040, is underway this week and residents are being encouraged to attend. The Las Cruces Sun-News has the schedule.
