Gov. Bill Richardson is slowly paying off his own presidential campaign debt. But that, and having been dubbed Judas by Clinton confidant James Carville after he endorsed Sen. Barack Obama, isn't stopping the guv from declaring his intent to help retire the campaign debt of former rival Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., according to ABC News.
"We've been asked to help. So in principle we are going to help," Richardson told ABC News after addressing members of the Democratic Leadership Council in Chicago at the centrist group's annual gathering. "I think the party needs to come together," he added.
Richardson also told the DLC that it was time to heal the rift in the Democratic Party exposed during the protracted presidential nomination process.
According to the AP, Richardson said:
New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who endorsed Obama after ending his own run for the Democratic nomination, urged DLC members to put aside any hurt feelings from the long primary race.
"There is still probably a need to heal a little bit," he said in a speech to the group. "It may take a little time — hopefully not too much longer. Everybody needs to find ways to recognize that we have an incredible opportunity to regain the White House."
It appears Richardson is doing his part to help heal the rift by helping to retire Clinton's campaign debt. Of course, the question is, What does 'in principle' look like, as in "We've been asked to help. So in principle we are going to help?" Is this help something that can be measured by actions? Or is it a statement meant just for media consumption?
Time will tell.
