Pearce, Udall to face off on NBC's "Meet the Press"

By Trip Jennings 08/01/2008

Republican Steve Pearce and Democrat Tom Udall can't decide when to debate each other in New Mexico, but they have agreed to face off on NBC's Sunday news show "Meet the Press."

The Associated Press is reporting the agreement..

No date has been chosen apparently. And there's still a little debate between the campaigns on whether it will count toward three debate they have agreed to.

The Associated Press reports:

Udall's side believes the “Meet the Press” debate, which hasn't been scheduled, counts toward the three-debate deal.

“We're pleased to have this be one of our three statewide televised debates,” said Marissa Padilla, spokeswoman for the Udall campaign.

Pearce's people disputed that contention, saying there should be three more debates originating in New Mexico. “Meet the Press” is produced in Washington, D.C.

“When we agreed to three televised debates, our impression was that we would have three televised debates in New Mexico,” Pearce spokesman Brian Phillips said. “Certainly, 'Meet the Press' is a completely different animal.”
