Ad watch: Pearce hits Udall on energy in TV ad
Steve Pearce has joined Tom Udall on the TV airwaves with his first Senate TV ad of the general election season. Udall has been running TV ads since before the primary and is expected to stay on the air until the election.Pearce's ad focused on using nuclear energy to help America find their way to energy independence. But he didn't let the ad go the entire way without taking a shot at his Democratic opponent, Udall.
Here's the ad:
"It may not be politically correct, but nuclear energy is a sure way to America's energy independence," Pearce begins the ad. Unlike many of his primary ads, this ad features Pearce speaking to the camera, telling what he believes needs to be done to "make America free from Middle East oil cartels."
This may work especially well for Pearce because of the man he is running to replace in the Senate. Sen. Pete Domenici was called a nuclear renaissance man just last year by MSNBC. Domenici also wrote a book published in 2004 called A Brighter Tomorrow: Fulfilling the Promise of Nuclear Energy.
It appears Pearce read that book.
Pearce insinuates that the only people against nuclear energy are environmentalists. "Tom Udall won't stand up to the far-left environmentalists," Pearce tells the camera. "I will."
There was only one mention of Pearce's well-known position on drilling in the ad, and it came at the end. "I approve this message because we need to invest in nuclear power and drill for domestic oil," Pearce ends the ad.
The entire ad shows the url for Pearce's campaign Web site, www.peopleforpearce.com.
Udall has already run several general-election television ads and has more money to spend on ads than Pearce. Udall ended June with $2.9 million in the bank. Pearce ended it with $531,624.

In the age of terrorism, nuclear reactors are inviting targets. Now Congressman Pearce is foolishly pushing for nuclear reactors in New Mexico in his new TV spot. By the way Mr. Pearce where are we going to put all the nuclear waste and what happens when radioactive elements accidentally leaks into our underground water systems?

Also There has been leaking tritium – a radioactive isotope of hydrogen – into the groundwater of areas surrounding nuclear plants. Leaks have been reported at the Braidwood, Byron, and Dresden reactors in Illinois, the Palo Verde reactors in Arizona, and the Indian Point nuclear plant near New York City. I sure Congressman Pearce knows nothing about this! This is a foolish venture when we can invest less money in wind and solar power.
