U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce is ahead of his rival Heather Wilson in the race for the GOP U.S. Senate nomination, according to the Journal Poll released today.
Pearce takes a six-point lead into Tuesday's primary. But there's still drama left in New Mexico's most hard-fought race of the primary season. Sixteen percent of the likely Republican voters surveyed by Albuquerque-based Research & Polling, Inc. were undecided. And polling was conducted May 27-29, finishing just prior to longtime GOP Sen. Pete Domenici's dramatic endorsement of Wilson on Friday. Domenici has held the seat Pearce and Wilson are seeking for 36 years.
Results of the telephone survey have a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
According to the Journal poll, Pearce, who represents the 2nd Congressional District in southern New Mexico, had the backing of 45 percent of likely Republican primary voters statewide.
Wilson, who represents the Albuquerque-based 1st Congressional District, had 39 percent.
Coming as no surprise, Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White handily leads state Senator Joe Carraro in the race for the 1st Congressional District GOP nomination, the Journal reported.
