Not what you might expect: McCain outspending Obama in N.M.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain is still outspending Democratic candidate Barack Obama on television in New Mexico.

Talking Points Memo obtained the numbers from Evan Tracey, the chief operating officer of TNS Media Intelligence/Campaign Media Analysis Group.

Talking Points Memo reported that "McCain has spent approximately $300,000 more, and has outspent Obama by roughly two to one." This is not unusual for McCain in other battleground states, either.

According to the report:

McCain is advertising heavily in 11 traditional battlegrounds; Obama is advertising in those same 11 plus roughly seven more; and McCain holds a heavy advantage in virtually all the 11 shared states.

The two states where this is not true are North Dakota and New Hampshire. In North Dakota, Obama has outspent McCain by $170,000. In New Hampshire, the spending is roughly even, according to the TNS Media Intelligence/Campaign Media Analysis Group.

According to number from the end of July, McCain was outspending Obama by $180,000 in TV ads in New Mexico.

Obama is actually spending about the same amount of money nationwide as McCain, according to Tracey, but Obama is advertising in an extra seven states in addition to McCain -- Indiana, Alaska, Montana, North Carolina, Florida, Georgia and southern Virginia.

Interestingly enough, McCain will probably enjoy a spending advantage until the Republican National Convention in September. At that time, McCain will receive $84 million in public financing for the general election.

Interesting point, but I suspect Obama is outspending McCain everywhere. He’s just putting his money into organizing his ground game. As you point out McCain will have $84 million for the remaining 11-12 weeks after the convention. Obama will probably raise that same amount this month since he is now “down” 5 points in the latest Zogby poll. Recall that the last time Obama appeared to be struggling his 1+ million donor base came through with record donations. I’m not worried.

Besides with McCain calling for the renegotiation of the 1922 Water Pact he might have shot himself in the foot here in NM and CO.
