New poll puts Obama up by 7 in NM

A new poll shows that Barack Obama leads John McCain, 51 percent to 44 percent, in New Mexico.

American Research Group polled 400 likely presidential voters from Sunday through Tuesday and found that Obama leads among both Democrats and independents. McCain still has a significant lead among Republicans.

The poll comes on the heels of Obama's national campaign manager's telling local reporters and bloggers that New Mexico is critical to putting the Democrat in the White House.

Obama leads strongly among women despite the choice of Sarah Palin as a running mate for McCain. The poll shows an advantage of 61 percent to 35 percent among women for Obama. McCain leads among men, 55 percent to 39 percent.

According to exit polling from 2004, polling which is not always reliable, John Kerry and George W. Bush tied in 2004 among women in New Mexico.

A Rasmussen poll from last week showed a different picture. That poll showed McCain surging to a 2-point lead following the Republican National Convention and his appearance in Albuquerque the previous weekend.

The margin of error on the ARG poll is plus or minus 4 percent.
