McCain still spending more on ads in NM

By Matthew Reichbach 09/17/2008

Like last month, Republican presidential candidate John McCain is outspending Democrat Barack Obama in New Mexico on advertising, according to the Wisconsin Advertising Project.

Last month McCain led in advertising spending by $180,000. In the week following the conclusion of the conventions, however, Obama has trimmed the advertising advantage to just $59,000. This spending doesn't include money spent on campaign offices; Obama has 35 campaign offices in New Mexico to McCain's 10.

Overall, the two were roughly even in advertising spending around the nation. McCain's campaign spent $7,803,000 on advertising in the week, while Obama spent $7,768,000.

The tone of the campaign also turned decidedly more negative, according to the group:

In line with the expectations of most observers, the campaign has turned more negative since the conclusion of the Republican Convention. In the first week of advertising after the conventions, Obama aired a higher percentage of negative ads than did McCain. 56 percent of the McCain campaign ads were negative, while 77 percent of Obama’s ads were negative.

New Mexico can expect to see more ads as well -- as long as polling shows the race to be tight, the two campaigns will slug it out in the state.
