Environmental group starts attack ads

By Matthew Reichbach 06/06/2008

So much for the general election starting after Labor Day.

The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund will soon begin airing TV ads against Steve Pearce. The environmental group reaffirmed their support for Tom Udall within hours of Pearce being declared the victor of the Republican Senate primary. Pearce defeated Heather Wilson by a narrow margin.

"The ad will be broadcast throughout New Mexico and highlights Pearce’s vote to give billions in tax breaks to big oil, as well as his terrible record on improving fuel economy standards, a cost cutting solution for New Mexicans that Pearce has consistently opposed," the group said in a press release.

“Pearce and Bush have actively worked against legislation that could have helped thousands of New Mexicans now struggling to keep up with rising gas prices,” said Defenders Action Fund President Rodger Schlickeisen in the press release.

The ad will air statewide for a week starting today.

In an interview for a previous story by the New Mexico Independent, Pearce spokesman Brian Phillips said the congressman “has an outstanding environmental record.”

“These groups are partisan political organizations intent on electing Democrats,” Phillips told reporter Heath Haussamen.

The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund is one of several environmental groups to back Tom Udall in the Senate race. Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund were instrumental in the defeat of former U.S. Rep. Richard Pombo. Pombo was the chairman of the House Resources Committee at the time he was defeated by Democrat Jerry McNerney.
