'Cracking the code'

A guide to energy efficiency

By Denise Tessier 06/26/2008

Architecture 2030, the Santa Fe non-profit whose 2030 Challenge has been adopted by trade groups and municipalities worldwide as a goals statement for energy efficiency by the year 2030, has followed up with a guidebook for cities, counties and states to achieve those goals.

The guide is a white paper entitled "Meeting the 2030 Challenge Through Building Codes."

The firm and its founder, Edward Mazria, say a single chart in the guide "provides the key to deciphering various building energy codes, standards and rating systems as they relate to the immediate 50 percent reduction target called for in the 2030 Challenge.

"Using the code equivalents provided in the chart ... local governments, states and industry professionals can achieve dramatic reductions and be confident that they are meeting the 2030 Challenge," the firm said in announcing the guide.

As we've reported previously in the New Mexico Independent, the challenge has been adopted in a variety of sectors, including the American Institute of Architects and the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the latter of which adopted a resolution for all buildings in all cities that was submitted by four mayors, including Albuquerque’s Martin Chavez.
