CD1: Heinrich goes 'red to blue'

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has placed Democratic candidate Martin Heinrich from the 1st Congressional district on their “red to blue” list.

“Martin Heinrich is a strong and principled leader committed to change. Martin has a proven record of raising the minimum wage, creating good jobs, cracking down on crime and protecting New Mexico’s environment,” said DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen. “The Red to Blue Program will give Martin the financial and structural edge to be even more competitive.”

The First Congressional district race is considered by many to be a top-tier race and may be one of the most competitive Congressional races around the nation. The seat is currently held by Heather Wilson who lost in the Republican Senate primary to Steve Pearce last Tuesday.

Heinrich will face Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White in November’s general election.

According to a DCCC press release, the Red to Blue program “highlights top Democratic campaigns across the country and offers them financial, communications, and strategic support.” The program raised nearly $22.6 million for 56 campaigns in 2006, or more than $400,000 per campaign. Heinrich is just the 12th Democratic candidate this cycle in the program. The program is for Democratic candidates running for Congress in open seats.

This is going to be a very interesting race given what incredible name recognition White has. I was watching the news last night and there he was, a mic in front of his mouth, talking about crime.

Heinrich is going to have his work cut out for him to ensure equal visibility without the free ride Bernalillo County Sheriff White has with local media.
