Not everyone's a Darren White fan, woof, woof, woof, but at least one big dog at the University of New Mexico, is. Head men's basketball coach Steve Alford has pledged his support, publicly, behind the Republican in his bid to win the 1st Congressional House seat against Democrat Martin Heinrich in November.
Alford, former Indiana basketball star and former Iowa coach, is the headliner at a fundraiser July 19 for White, the current Bernalillo County sheriff. The event is being held at the home of prominent Univeristy of New Mexico lobbyist and former state Rep. Joe Thompson. It's Alford who appears to be the big draw here, however. If you are one of the invitees, you will be allowed to take your picture with Alford for $1,000 a pop. Attending will set you back only $250 without a photo op with the Lobo leader.
Joe Monahan, in his blog, wonders if the sports radio guys are talking about Alford's public political motivations. I'm not sure anybody in Loboland cares, really. They just want Alford to win, baby, win. Still, it will be fascinating to see what the final tally on the event is because I want to know how many people are willing to shell out $1,000 for a photo and glass of vino with Alford. Interesting.
Maybe it's not too late for Henirch to seek out the support of another Lobo leader -- head women's basketball coach Don Flanagan. Now that would give the radio talkies something to blather about, wouldn't it?

I am interested to see how this one plays out. It now appears that Alford is suggesting that the White campaign misrepresented his role in the fundraiser….
