ALBUQUERQUE -- Barely a few hours after the New Mexico Independent published a story reporting that Congressional candidate Ben Ray Luján had "no comment" on whether he supports his would-be successor on the elected Public Regulation Commission, fellow Democrat Jerome Block Jr., the Luján campaign has taken a position.
"Ben Ray Luján supports a strong Democratic ticket with candidates that will stand up for New Mexico and that includes Jerome Block Jr.,” campaign spokesman Mark Nicastre told the Independent in a brief phone interview yesterday.
After the Santa Fe Reporter published a story last week detailing Block's checkered legal history dating back to when the PRC hopeful, 31, was in his early 20s, NMI contacted the Luján campaign to inquire whether or not Luján supported Block. Several days after the initial inquiry, Nicastre send an e-mail response stating, "No comment from Ben." He added, "From me: 'Commissioner Luján is focused on his election and meeting with the voters of the 3rd Congressional District.'"
Asked if the subsequent endorsement of Block constituted a new position, Nicastre said, "I don't believe it does... I just believe there was a miscommunication on the original exchange.”
