U.S. Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., pulls off another fundraising feat during the first three months of 2008. Not only did the northern New Mexico congressman out raise his two GOP rivals for the soon-to-be vacant U.S. Senate seat. He pulled in the second-largest online haul of any Democratic congressional candidate across the nation using ActBlue, an online political action committee.

The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division will begin issuing new drivers licenses to drivers starting this week in Santa Fe. The process will roll out in offices around the state by mid-June.

No one is required to change their licenses, but the MVD says the new licenses will be secure and issued to those who go into the office to renew licenses that are expired.

In a series of web ads aimed at superdelegates, the NRSC has already launched a video asking if Udall will vote for presidential candidate Barack Obama in the wake of Obama’s “bitter” comment.

Laura Berg, a local Veterans Affairs nurse, won a First Amendment award from a major literary organization earlier this month. For writing a book perhaps? No. She beat a sedition rap. Berg, you may recall, penned a letter to Albuquerque's alt weekly The Alibi a few years back. In it, Berg criticized President Bush and members of his cabinet for the administration's response to Hurricane Katrina and the Iraq war. She said they should be tried for criminal negligence. That prompted a sedition investigation by the FBI in which she was cleared.

Lujan takes to the road

RIO RANCHO—It doesn’t take long listening to U.S. Congress candidate Ben Ray Luján to see he believes he’s the greenest candidate in the Democratic field. Though he had already traveled from a Cuba, N.M. town hall meeting to Rio Rancho for another town hall, the passion with which he spoke about the environment clearly shined though any fatigue he may have felt. The travel doesn’t seem to be taking a toll on Luján; his eyes are still bright, and his answers to questions are detailed and thought-out. He looks to be enjoying his time on the campaign trail. Luján shows an intimacy with the Third Congressional District; he can speak off the cuff about small towns like Questa as easily as discussing the politics in Santa Fe, even giving a recommendation on where to grab a burger in the one-stoplight town.

Bring a book, a magazine, anything to keep you occupied June 3. State elections officials expect a high voter turnout for the state primary, which could mean lines. In fact, one official estimates a whopping 70 percent turnout of the state's roughly 875,000 registered Democrats and Republicans. One million paper ballots will be ordered just for contingency sake. The big draw, some party officials speculate, could be the Republican U.S. Senate primary battle. And that would be good for the GOP.
